Well, these pictures certainly suggest that. Below are some scenes of Jakarta at Christmas time: A 90% Muslim country and yet they take this Christmas stuff seriously! From Christmas decorations EVERYwhere, to Santa and his juggling rainbow-afro elf (huh?), to choirs belting out Jesus songs, to "Touch the Ice Tree for 8 Seconds and Make a Wish" (a Christmas tradition I'm not familiar with), to fake snow/ice exhibits for the kids to play in, to a shopping mall that creates a snow blizzard of bubbles every few hours (my kids LOVED it!). Let's face it: This city is down with Christmas!!
Growing up, Christmas time to me always meant one thing: No School! The same is true here. And, they don't even call it by it's newly decreed P.C. term back home, which is "Winter Break" because it's NOT winter in Indonesia (only rainy season and dry season). So, for three solid weeks, my kids had no school. While most kids visit home during this time, or travel the world, a lot of kids are out of town. But, for many who were IN town for at least a week or two, I decided to create: CAMP VICTORIA!! I took my kids and whomever of our friends wanted to join, out on daily adventures. We went bowling, horse-back riding, ice skating and more. Pictures below:
Friday at Camp Victoria: Ice skating and then lunch at Din Tai Fung, our favorite Chinese noodle/dumpling restaurant. And, we gave a big Camp Victoria welcome to our Alternative-Work-Schedule camper: Daddy!
